Zambia Project

From London to Lusaka - supporting the growth of grassroots climbing in Zambia

Our partnership with Pa Mitengo Climbing and Calisthenics, Zambia's first indoor climbing wall, supports the growing climbing community in Lusaka.

The project is about learning from each other. We're helping lay foundations so the climbing community in Lusaka can grow in its own way and building connections internationally so more people can experience the benefits of challenge and adventure, helping grassroots sport to grow far beyond the UK.

The project started when Dan, owner of Pa Mitengo, moved to Zambia and set out to build the country's first indoor climbing wall from scratch - much like we did at Mile End Climbing Wall forty years a go.

In 2025, our team traveled to Lusaka to donate climbing holds and equipment, share expertise in route setting and coaching, and help host Zambia's first international climbing competition.

Zambia Project
“As it’s a newer and smaller community here, sometimes I think we can get caught up in how we do things and it limits our horizons. This experience has inspired everyone on the ground to dream big, which is one of the best results I could hope for as its forward looking. I think the Develop through Challenge team has left a lifelong footprint on both the sport and community here, not only in Zambia but also regionally.”
